Volunteers

Volunteers - Cowichan Hospice

Cowichan Hospice volunteers support people doing what they need to do and saying what they need to say at a very precious time of their lives, before and after a death occurs.

Hospice volunteers provide emotional care for the dying and the bereaved. Supported by a Board of Directors and permanent staff, 60 hospice volunteers provide services to people living from Ladysmith to the Malahat, including the communities at Lake Cowichan and Shawnigan Lake.

Cowichan Hospice Volunteers are the Heart of Hospice, providing emotional support for community members who are grieving, caregiving a palliative loved one, or on a palliative journey themselves.

Volunteers listen, hold space, respect the opinions, beliefs and choices of each person, and invite confidence in an atmosphere of trust and confidentiality. They understand that grief, death and dying are personal journeys and provide support objectively, compassionately, and with patience for the individual process and needs of the client.

Some volunteers provide 1:1 grief support, palliative or caregiver client support, and others work as part of the volunteer team at Hospice House. Additional opportunities may include supporting fundraising, assisting with administrative work, or gardening.
